Wandering fields is a place where to be geographers, and literally draw on the surface of the earth, or where to play in and with the ground, between the scale of the soil that we touch, and the earth that we draw.  Imagined for the halls of Assab One, a tribute to the plains we inhabit – the Pianura of the north of Italy, where we grew up, and the Low Lands of the Netherlands, where we now live – It is imagined as a sequence of fields arrayed into a vast drawing board. Here, loose materials – charcoal, sand, expanded clay, shells, hemp – can be drawn upon, sculpted, or mixed into new soils, through the actions of drawing and playing. This carpet of soils, minerals and seeds covers the halls of the former printing room, punctuated by material experiments, translating that same matter into materials and objects. Tools and games mediate the encounter between scales: petrified soils become man made rocks, while different wood species compose the rakes, compasses and pencils for visitors to draw with. Over time, through the comings and goings of guests and the sequences of drawing and deleting, materials will mix, producing new forms of soil. This new ground will become the material heritage of the project, loosely composed into a fertile heap, and gardened as a man made mound for the coming twelve months in a Milanese park.

Wandering fields is a project by Studio Ossidiana (Giovanni Bellotti, Alessandra Covini) with Pedro Daniel Pantaleone, Konstantin Beck, Ebru Guner; production Tomaello Bv.

Biography

Studio Ossidiana (founded 2015) is a practice based in Rotterdam working at the crossroad of architecture, visual art and design, led by Giovanni Bellotti and Alessandra Covini. Balancing research and fabrication, the practice explores innovative approaches to design and is always in search of new material expressions to translate visions into tangible spaces and objects. In 2018, SO was awarded the Dutch Prix de Rome, the most prestigious prize in the Netherlands for architects under the age of 35. The practice’s work has been published in both printed and digital media, and exhibited in collective and solo exhibitions, for example at Venice Biennale 2021, Arkdes 2021, Istanbul Architecture Biennale 2021, Chicago Architecture Biennale 2021, Istanbul Art Biennale 2019, CIVA 2019, Het Nieuwe Institute 2019, Jan Van Eyck Academie 2017 and 2020, Dutch Design Week 2016 and 2021.
