A participatory mail art project that – starting from the study of behavioural neuroscience to combat prejudice through the activation of art – involved hundreds of people in a choral reflection on racism. The exhibition and the book published by Skira collect about 400 postcards, small great works of art dedicated to George Floyd and to what his death represented, created by ordinary people and well-known names such as Oliviero Toscani, Cristiana Capotondi, Gad Lerner, Carlo Verdelli, Riccardo Chailly, Giulio Cappellini, Italo and Margherita Rota, Maurizio De Giovanni.

Biography

Giangiacomo Rocco di Torrepadula (GG), born in Naples in 1966, is a visual artist and photographer. His work primarily focuses on issues of hate and prejudice, particularly with regard to race. Prior to devoting himself full-time to his work as an artist, Giangiacomo was a serial startupper in the field of digital health. He lived for many years in San Francisco, and it was here that he was able to witness from the inside some of the most notorious cases which fuelled the Black Lives Matter movement. An experience, which drove him to investigate these issues with his Blind Sight project from the perspective of neuroscience. The artist explores with a novel approach the mechanisms that generate stereotypes and prejudices, and how these can even lead to hate crimes. Among his solo exhibitions, two were curated by Lanfranco Colombo, while Philippe Daverio included him in his book 13×17: 1000 artists for an eccentric investigation into Italian art published by Rizzoli (2007). In 2022, he won the prestigious New Post Photography Prize at MIA – Milan Image Art Fair. He exhibited at Centrale Festival 13 in Fano (2022) at the Rocca Malatestiana and at Genoa Design Week 2022 in the ancient convent of Santa Maria di Castello. He lives in Franciacorta, where his studio is located, and works all over the world.
